Padayani is a ritualistic dance popular in the central Travancore region of Kerala. The dance is performed in temples dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali in a festive atmosphere. The performers wear colourful masks and spectacular headgears called ‘kolams’ to the accompaniment of a one-sided drum called thappu. The Padayani festival at the Palli Bhagavathi temple at Neelemperoor in Kottayam district is special for another reason too. Large swan effigies called ‘Annam Kettu’ are taken out here adding more charm to the festival. Fireworks and traditional orchestra are other features of the festival.
